GRADE 1 NATURAL AND SOCIAL STUDIES THEMATIC LESSON FOLLOWING THE CLIL APPROACH

Sai Dong Urban Primary School organized a Grade 1 Natural and Social Studies lesson using the CLIL approach. Through interactive activities, students learned about household items while naturally using simple English vocabulary and sentence patterns. The lesson developed communication, collaboration, thinking, practical skills, and awareness of caring for household items and appreciating family members.

In order to implement the orientation of educational innovation and gradually make English the second language in schools, Sai Dong Urban Primary School organized a Grade 1 Natural and Social Studies thematic lesson using the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) approach – integrating subject content with English. The lesson was conducted by Ms. Pham Ha Nhi, creating an engaging, student-centred, and highly interactive learning environment.

In the lesson "Lesson 3: Household Items", students participated in many engaging experiential activities such as The Mystery Box, Discover a Tidy House, I Am the Owner of My House, and the game YES! YES! YES! – NO! NO! NO!. Through these activities, students not only identified and stated the uses of some familiar household items but also began to become familiar with everyday English vocabulary such as fan, table, chair, plate, bowl, and cup, together with the simple communication pattern "What is this?" – "It is a...".

The highlight of the lesson was that English was integrated in a natural way, suitable for the psychological characteristics of Grade 1 students. English was not separated from the subject content but became a tool to support students in observing, communicating, and exploring knowledge through active learning activities.

Through the combination of knowledge, experience, and language, the lesson contributed to developing students' communication, collaboration, thinking, and the ability to apply knowledge in practice. At the same time, students were educated to have an awareness of using and taking care of household items and to appreciate the efforts of their family members.
