Boarding services and nutritious school meals during the first week of the new school year at Sai Dong Urban Primary School
In the early days of the new school year, as learning routines are gradually being established, one of the activities receiving special attention from Sai Dong Urban Primary School is the provision of boarding services and nutritious school meals for students. For primary school students, a meal at school is not simply about meeting their nutritional needs during the day. It is also a time for them to rest, restore their energy, develop healthy eating habits, practise independence, and build appropriate routines for communal life. From the very first week of the new school year, the school's boarding services have been implemented in a coordinated manner, with a focus on food safety control – meal organisation – supervision – and the development of routines for students.
Food Safety Control – Beginning Before the Meal Is Served
To ensure a safe meal for students, each meal is supported by a process that is carefully organised and supervised by the school. Among these measures, the three-step food inspection and food sample retention are carried out as important stages in the food safety control process. Inspections are conducted at each stage, contributing to the control of food from receipt and preparation to the point when meals are served to students. These seemingly quiet tasks are the school's way of building a “safety barrier” around every student meal – exercising care from the point of entry and throughout the entire organisation process.
Each Meal Is a Time for Care
Once the meals are prepared, the organisation of the boarding dining area is carried out with the aim of ensuring that students eat safely, orderly, and in a manner appropriate to their age. Teachers and those involved in boarding services accompany students during mealtimes and guide them in developing necessary habits: maintaining hygiene, sitting in the correct place, using utensils appropriately, eating calmly, and taking care of the shared space. For Grade 1 students in the first weeks of the school year in particular, mealtime is also a very special “learning period”. They are guided step by step to become familiar with the boarding environment, learn to serve themselves within their abilities, maintain hygiene, and gradually develop routines for communal life.
School and Family – Accompanying and Supervising Together
One aspect that the school places particular emphasis on in its boarding services is strengthening coordination and supervision with students' parents. Representatives of the parents of each class work together to participate in supervising all stages of organising school meals. The supervision results are compiled into reports and sent to parents daily via the school's ecostudy platform. The presence of parents not only contributes to greater openness and transparency in boarding services but also creates a direct channel connecting the school, families, and the service provider, all working towards a common goal: ensuring that every day students come to school is a safe day in which they receive thoughtful care.
From a Small Meal – to a Safe School Environment
The first week of the new school year has come to an end. The students' initial unfamiliarity is gradually being replaced by familiarity: becoming familiar with their classes, teachers, friends, and the routines of school life. Along this journey, safely prepared, systematically organised, and regularly supervised boarding meals are an important part of a holistic educational environment. “Safety at Every Stage – Nutrition in Every Meal – Routines Every School Day” – this is how the school and families work together to nurture a safe, caring school environment that supports students' holistic development.
